Savannah Music Video Production
We love producing music videos. Especially when we have the opportunity to work with musical artists in Savannah, Beaufort, Hilton Head, and the surrounding areas. We recently produced a hip hop and rap music video in the historic district of Savannah, and today I want to tell you all about our awesome experience and our Savannah music video production.
When we were first contacted by the artist 'Whipp King' to produce a music video for his new song 'Dreamz', he was looking for a video production company who could help him create a vision for the video. There were a few aspects of his song that he had already envisioned some ideas for, but many of the elements were left up to us. So, after listening to his song over and over again for inspiration, we formulated our ideas, shot list, and locations for the music video. 'Whipp King' is based out of Beaufort, SC, and the look of nearby Savannah's historic district would lend itself perfectly to the story and feel of his song. So, after deciding on Savannah for the main portions of the video, we set out to decide on the perfect spots for each scene.
Based on the artist's budget for the music video, we determined how many locations we could realistically film without wasting too much time moving from place to place. After searching for just the right spots in Savannah, we found exactly what we were looking for. On a stretch of East Broughton Street and it's adjacent alleys, we narrowed our search down to one section that provided us with multiple shots within walking distance of each other. This ensured our time was well spent, we wouldn't have to move our filming equipment a bunch of times, and the artist wouldn't be forced to waste energy walking all over the place.
We began in an alley behind East Broughton Street that provided the kind of edgy, urban look the song dreamed up. In the song, there is a reference to a stripper who does what she has to in order to earn money for her kids. To capture this in the video without actually filming inside of a strip club and hiring a dancer and extras, we filmed the stripper leaving work with lots of cash in her hands as she walks to her car, which is also referenced in the song. She's decked out in her form fitting clothing, but she isn't revealing too much. This helps her character toe the line between a stripper and a mother providing for her family.
Next, we moved to 'Whipp King's' first scene in the same alley, but a more edgy looking spot than before. Here, we had Whipp King go through his song and rap the lyrics as we captured footage from two cameras simultaneously. We also had him act out scenes when he references drug selling earlier in life to illustrate his rise in quality of life. When this portion was finished, we moved him to a stretch of SCAD (Savannah College of Art and Design) along East Broughton Street that had a great overhang. This provided a nice shady soft box look to our Savannah music video production for extra footage. With busy Leopold's Ice Cream directly across the street, we garnered lots of attention. But hey, that's the life of a rising hip hop artist.
To finish the Savannah music video production, we wrapped up in nearby Hilton Head Island at a rented condominium in the Marriott ocean front resort. Here we filmed scenes depicting Whipp King's childhood with his mother, as well as green screen filming. All of the footage you see of Whipp King standing amongst moving spotlights was filmed in front of a green screen. In the end, we feel like it really turned out great and can't wait to start on the next one!
