Daufuskie Island Wedding Behind the Scenes
We were so thrilled to photograph and film a beautiful wedding recently on Daufuskie Island in South Carolina. If you’ve never been, or heard of, Daufuskie Island, it’s definitely worth looking into!
Located right beside Hilton Head Island, Daufuskie Island has managed to remain largely uncorrupted by the outside world due to it’s lack of a bridge to the mainland. If you’ve ever been to Harbor Town on Hilton Head Island, you can easily spot Daufuskie from the area around the famous light tower. If you’re arean’t familiar with Harbor Town, it’s the cool area where the yachts come in to dock beside the Sea Pines golf course where the RBC Heritage golf tournament is played.
As I mentioned earlier, there’s no bridge to drive your car to Daufuskie. Instead, the island offers a ferry service. Lucky for us photographers and videographers, the Haig Point resort provided free ferry shuttle aboard their private ferry boat. And let me tell you, riding on this ferry boat was like flying first class on a commercial airline. The ride lasted about 15-20 minutes, which was just enough time to enjoy the view before we had to get down to business. When we disembarked the ferry boat, Haig Point had a golf cart charged and ready for us to zoom around the island. This was yet another fun and unique aspect of our day on Daufuskie. Our first stop was the Haig Point Lighthouse!
The groom and groomsmen were getting ready inside the Haig Point Lighthouse, so we dropped off our photographer, Laurie to take their pictures. Next, we zoomed over to the the bride’s parent’s rental home not far away and got to work taking her final touches pictures. Before we knew it, we were photographing and filming the couple’s first look. As the day rolled on, the moon snuck up on us and by the time the outdoor ceremony was over, it was almost pitch black dark. It was time to pull out our trusty on-flash mini softbox. Nothing beats it when the light is low and there’s no ceiling to bounce the flash off of. We’ve even written articles on this awesome accessory.
After a dark and dusty golfcart ride, with numerous deer spottings, to the Haig Point clubhouse, it was time for the reception. The food was amazing. The dancing was entertaining. There was not a thing more we could ask for. When the reception wrapped up, it was time for another ferry ride back to Hilton Head Island. As we floated against the current on our return journey, the ferry ride felt like an eternity! Especially with our tired eyes and aching feet. It was all worth the effort, however, as we knew this was one of those wedding experiences we would never forget.
